Implant Retained Denture

An implant retained denture is a denture held in place by implants. Traditional dentures rest on purely the gums or gums and teeth.  An implant supported denture is a type of overdenture and an excellent option for patients who have no teeth and insufficient jawbone to support a denture but enough to support implants.

Implant retained dentures provide wearers with an improved quality of life and oral health.

Why choose implant retained dentures over conventional dentures?

Gum and jawbone can shrink over time following extraction of natural teeth, which can affect the fit and comfort of conventional dentures. Due to this shrinkage, your dentist may eventually need to reline your conventional dentures or, in some cases, create a new set.
Studies show that wearers of conventional dentures only have a 15–25% chewing capability compared to a full set of natural teeth. However, implant retained dentures can restore up to 100% of a patient’s natural chewing ability.

What are the benefits of implant retained dentures?

Implant retained dentures offer patients a range of benefits over conventional dentures:

  • Chew, speak and smile with confidence
  • Secure and comfortable without the need for an adhesive
  • A more natural look and feel than traditional dentures
  • They are more durable and with good care can last many years
  • They boost the wearer’s confidence because they are stable and function similarly to  natural teeth

What is the procedure for fitting implants?

Implants for implant retained dentures are fitted in the same manner as other dental implant treatments. The implants are small titanium screws surgically placed into the jawbone. Once the implants have fused with the bone in the jaw and the gums have healed, your dentist will, over a series of appointments, order your custom-made dentures. Once they are ready, your dentist will fit your new dentures onto the implants and instruct you on how to wear and maintain them.

How do the dentures attach to the implant?

A special retainer system comprised of two components fixes the dentures to the implants. The first component is permanently attached to the implants. The second component is part of the dentures. These components lock together and click into place when properly connected.

Can I eat and sleep normally with implant retained dentures?

Implant retained dentures function in much the same way as natural teeth. They are secure and strong but still require special care and maintenance.

How do I care for my implant retained dentures?

Maintain routine dental hygiene habits and cleaning of your denture. Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly so they can check the health of your gums and the fit of your dentures. With regular care, you can expect years of use and reliability from implant retained dentures. Contact your dentist if you experience any discomfort. Your dentures should fit comfortably, allowing you to eat, speak and smile with confidence.
