  • FAQ

What are the risk factors for mouth cancer?

While mouth cancer can develop in anyone, certain risk factors can increase the likelihood of its development. These include:

  • The use of tobacco, including chewing tobacco, cigars, and cigarettes.
  • Heavy alcohol consumption over an extended period.
  • Heightened or prolonged sun exposure.
  • A personal medical history of oral cancer.

What are the signs of mouth cancer?

  • Red or white patches in the mouth.
  • Numbness or tenderness in the mouth or lips.
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing.
  • A sore/ulcer that doesn’t heal.

What can I expect during an oral cancer screening?

An oral cancer screening typically occurs during a routine dentist appointment and does not require any preparation or recovery time.

During the exam, your dentist will carefully examine your mouth, gums, lips, and tongue to look for abnormalities. They will look for sores, patches or other discolourations within the mouth. The dentist will also feel inside your mouth and along the gum line and your palette to monitor for lumps or other abnormal tissues.

Mouth devices that are removable, such as dentures or orthodontic fixtures, must be removed before the screening so the dentist can check all areas of the mouth.

What happens after the screening?

If your dentist did not recognise any abnormalities in your mouth, then no additional cancer screening steps are required, and your dental appointment will continue as normal.

If your dentist did note abnormalities, they may recommend a referral to see a specialist for further investigation.

The dentists and dental professionals at Platinum Dental Care can guide you through the oral cancer screening process and give prevention advice such as smoking cessation advice.
