Preventative Dentistry

Preventative dentistry helps to identify dental health issues at an earlier stage, making them easier and less expensive to treat than if they had been left unchecked for too long.

It involves the regular maintenance and upkeep of oral hygiene to prevent dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. This includes regular dental check-ups and oral hygiene consultations, and tailor made advice on how to maintain good oral health habits and diets at home. We offer bi-annual dental and hygiene appointments, consultations and preventative care treatments to help optimise dental health for a lifetime.

What can I expect at a preventative dental appointment?

Our treatments are always bespoke to suit your particular needs. A standard preventative dental appointment will include a comprehensive examination of the mouth, teeth, gums and any necessary investigations. Your dentist will also address any issues you may be experiencing, as well as advice on how to prevent tooth wear and jaw joint problems. The dentist will then offer options for further treatment if necessary.

What can I expect at a hygiene appointment?

You will have a comprehensive examination of your gums, oral hygiene and teeth cleaning advice as well as scale and polish of your teeth. Advice on frequency and length of future hygiene appointments will be given. Airflow polish for stain removal is also given as an option.

What is a scale and polish?

No matter how often you brush your teeth, there are areas and crevices that brushing does not reach. These areas are prone to soft plaque and hard tartar build-up (a tough layer of mineralised bacteria deposits).

A scale and polish is a common cleaning procedure done by an oral hygienist. It involves first removing the built-up plaque and tartar from your teeth by using specialised instruments. The teeth are then polished to eliminate stains. Your hygienist will offer advice as to how often you should schedule scale and polish treatments.

Please let your hygienist know if you are experiencing any tooth or gum sensitivity before or during hygiene treatment.

What are the benefits of preventative dentistry?

Preventative dentistry contributes to both your oral and overall health. Scheduling preventative dental treatments, coupled with a regular at-home care routine, can prevent issues such as cavities, gum disease, or the softening of tooth enamel. It also mitigates other health issues that have been linked to poor dental hygiene, such as heart disease and strokes.

Regular preventative dentistry serves to identify oral health issues sooner before they become more difficult and expensive to treat.

Regular dental visits also serve as a reminder to practice good daily oral health hygiene at home, and your hygienist or dentist can advise you as to the best care for your teeth and gums.

What can I do at home to practice good oral health?

  • First, consult your dentist and hygienist who can offer advice to help you develop an at-home dental care routine
  • Brush with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day.
  • Clean interdentally daily
  • Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash
  • Make a note of any changes or sensitives in your mouth and gums, and discuss any issues that may occur with your dentist

What can I do if I am nervous about a dental visit?

Many individuals experience anxiety at the thought of dental care treatment. At Platinum Dental Care our dental team work closely with you to make you feel calm and comfortable throughout your treatment. So we can give you the best care, we would advise you to:

  • Talk with your dentist before and during your visit about what it is that makes you nervous
