When would I need dentures?

You may need dentures to:

  • Permanently replace multiple missing teeth
  • Immediately replace one or more teeth after extraction
  • to prevent bone loss where teeth are missing
  • Prevent damage to existing teeth or prevent gum recession on either side of gaps.

What types of dentures are available?

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. Complete dentures replace all the teeth and rest on the gums. Partial Dentures replace some of the teeth. They can attach to existing teeth and cover the gums of missing teeth.

What is the procedure?

  • We take an impression or scan of your mouth for a template of your new teeth and select the shape and shade of teeth to match your natural teeth. These are sent to a specialised laboratory to start making your custom made dentures.
  • A waxed model with the denture base and teeth is tried in mouth to check for comfort and aesthetics.
  • The template is sent to the laboratory for preparation
  • Your dentures are fitted at your final appointment and any final adjustments are made.

What are the benefits of treatment?

  • Your smile is restored for a more youthful appearance
  • You can chew, speak and eat properly

How will I feel after treatment?

It’s completely normal to experience some issues until you become accustomed to wearing your new dentures which can take up to a few weeks.

Continue to visit your dentist for regular check-ups to ensure your Dentures aren’t loose. Daily wear and tear as well as any changes in your gums may loosen your Dentures.

Is it possible to have them put in the same day as extractions?

Yes, it is possible, but you may experience some discomfort where the extractions were performed.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

It can take a few weeks to become fully accustomed to wearing Dentures and get used to chewing hard or sticky food.

How do I care for my dentures?

  • Clean them daily with the correct cleaning product to remove stains and bacteria. Do not use toothpaste.
  • Brush them with a denture brush or soft toothbrush.
  • Remove your dentures at night and store them in a water-based cleaning solution to prevent them from becoming cracked or warped.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

Yes, but it is preferable to remove them overnight to give your gums an opportunity to relax from the pressure of wearing them during the day and to maintain hygiene.

How long do dentures last?

With good oral care, Dentures can last several years. Dentures must be cleaned every day to maintain proper oral hygiene. They will, eventually, need to be replaced due to wear and tear and eventual gum and bone loss related to ageing.
