Fissure Sealants

Fissure sealants are a vital part of preventative dentistry, particularly for teens and young children.

Teeth with fissure sealants collect fewer bacteria and food particles and prevent cavities from forming.

  • FAQ

What are fissure sealants?

Fissure sealants are a resin coating painted onto the chewing surface of the back teeth or molars. Your dentist will apply fissure sealants to smooth out any pits and grooves in these teeth, altering the texture of the parts of the teeth where plaque and tartar can build up.

Who can benefit from fissure sealants?

Children who have permanent molars with deep grooves (fissures) or have a high risk of tooth decay will benefit from fissure sealants. It is best to apply treatment early to achieve the maximum protection for the teeth and to prevent the development of cavities.

How long do fissure sealants last?

Fissure sealants should last for many years. However, this depends on the maintenance of diet and oral hygiene.  It is possible the seals may wear down over time, so your dentist may recommend adding or replacing some of the sealant to maintain its effectiveness.

Are there any special care instructions for fissure sealants?

There are no specific instructions for the care of fissure sealants other than maintaining your excellent dental hygiene and diet habits.

We have a philosophy of preventative dentistry and recommend instilling good oral hygiene habits, even before permanent teeth have started to erupt. It is critical to continue these habits after having fissure sealants applied. Fortunately, the treatment also benefits the patient by providing a smoother surface which is easier to keep clean.
