The impact of eating disorders on your teeth.

27/02/2014

This week is Eating Disorder Awareness week (24th Feb-2nd March)

Did you know that around 1.6 million people in the UK are affected by some form of an eating disorder, 40% of these are bulimic.

Bulimia can cause many health problems including dehydration, sore throats, kidney and bowel problems as well as severe damage to teeth through erosion.

Erosion is the wearing away of tooth tissue. It is caused in bulimics by:

> repeated vomiting and acid regurgitation

> Brushing teeth immediately after vomiting to avoid bad breath

> High intakes of carbonated drinks and energy drinks

The problems that occur in teeth include:

> Pain and sensitivity

> Unattractive, discolouration

> Speaking and chewing becomes a problem

> Leads to teeth needing to be filled or removed.

If you are worried about your teeth, come talk to us at Platinum Dental Care. Our dentists are here to listen to you and help you, they are fully trained to deal with this problem. We can help to advise you as to how to prevent future tooth wear with simple steps such as using a high fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash designed specifically to combat erosion.
