Docklands Dentists Promoting Oral Awareness

28/07/2013

Oral hygiene is a big thing in the U.S. where the importance of good teeth is well documented, and a regular dental programme comes as a way of life.

And they’re right to think this way. Your teeth are important. Very important.

While many people in London are too busy with their hectic lifestyles to pay attention to what’s going on in their mouths, it’s time to change this. You’ll already be aware that without good teeth you will have difficulty chewing food properly – that goes without saying – but there are many other issues at play too. For example, did you also realise that poor dental hygiene can even lead to the shape of your face changing quite considerably? Not many people do.

It is vital that you ensure your teeth remain in absolutely perfect condition. Let us explain why.

Eliminate Tooth Decay

One of the main reasons as to why people visit our Docklands Dental Surgery is tooth decay. Chipped teeth, eroding teeth, broken teeth – they’re normally all due to some form of decay or weakening of the teeth.

Decay occurs when acids in your mouth start to attack the enamel of your teeth. Eventually, if left untreated, it breaks the enamel down and starts to attack the pulp. Ultimately this will lead to the death of the tooth, meaning that it is going to need root canal treatment or will need to be removed.

Of course, you are also likely to be experiencing huge amounts of pain before this point, and then it’s always a quick call to the emergency dentist to fix things, so why do people in this country leave it so late?

Thankfully, tooth decay is one of the most preventable dental problems, and it usually involves nothing more than regular brushing of your teeth, a healthy diet and regular trips to the dentist to check for cavities or abnormalities. If you don’t look after your teeth, you won’t get them back, remember that.

Prevent Gum Disease

Another common problem in the U.K. is gum disease. This occurs when plaque stays on your teeth for long periods of time, perhaps as a result of too many sugary substances or not engaging in proper dental hygiene.

Quite often this plaque gets underneath the gum, which over time is going to lead it to pull away from the tooth.  This leads to the formation of little pockets where the plaque is able to penetrate, and eventually the plaque will start to attack the tooth from underneath and cause bone loss.

Not only is this is incredibly painful due to the inflammation and infections that you are going to suffer, the bone loss will eventually cause the surrounding teeth to loosen or fall out, changing the shape of your face.   As with tooth decay, this is something which is easily preventable if you engage in good dental hygiene. Again, it shouldn’t be a visit to the emergency dentist to alleviate the pain – it doesn’t have to get that far. Regular trips to your London Dentist will ensure it never does.

Regular Dental Inspections

It’s important to remember that even though you may feel as though your teeth are in perfect condition, it is still important that you visit your dentist at least once every six months. No matter how much effort you put in, there will always be something that can slip past undetected and cause damage to your teeth without you being aware. In fact, it’s possible that right now you could have many small cavities in your mouth which are waiting to break into a much larger hole. This needs to be avoided at all costs.

The value of a trip to the dentist really can’t be stated enough. In addition to the obvious factors we’ve mentioned, regular dental check ups can also help early identification of other problems – for example, oral cancer or general infections of the mouth.

Remember, if you are concerned with the health of your teeth, you should get in touch with your local dentist in London who will be able to carry out a detailed inspection of your mouth. They will also be able to provide you with advice on how to ensure that your mouth stays in tip top condition.

Dentists In London Could Do More

We hope to educate London about dental hygiene through this blog and promote the benefits of good oral health. Trips to the dentist don’t have to be all about tooth whitening or teeth straightening, despite what the cosmetics industry and magazines demand. A simple check up can prevent more serious problems that will plague you in the years to come and give you great peace of mind.

If you’re a London Dentist and wish to promote better oral hygiene, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll be happy to share your knowledge with our community via this blog.
